Forever Chemicals in Your Oral Care? The Case for Switching Your Floss Today

I am always on the lookout for ways to improve my physical wellbeing. Part of that involves understanding the dangers that certain food and life products may pose to one’s health.

I came across a video from @nontoxicdad on Instagram, highlighting some of the dangers posed by using big name-brand dental flosses.

Being the husband of a dental student, I of course asked my wife about this and her thoughts. While she was keen on expressing the need to floss (no need to remind me!), she couldn’t disagree in looking for a dental floss alternative.

Many conventional dental floss brands use petroleum-based coatings, and some even contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals.” These are synthetic chemicals that have been linked to a range of health risks, and their presence in a product that comes into such close contact with our gums (think… close to a lot of blood flow) is concerning.

Beyond personal health, there’s the environmental impact to consider. Petroleum-based floss and PFAS-containing products contribute to pollution when discarded. These materials don’t biodegrade and can contaminate soil and water sources, adding to the already overwhelming issue of plastic waste and chemical pollutants.

There are safer, more sustainable alternatives out there. Floss made from biodegradable materials, like silk or cornstarch, offers a fantastic option for those looking to protect both their health and the environment. These products often use natural coatings like beeswax or plant-based waxes, which are just as effective at gliding between teeth without the risk of chemical exposure.

For me and my wife, it was an easy decision. Taking care of our teeth is essential, but doing so shouldn’t come at the cost of our overall health or the planet. I recommend this Amazon find, but your local health food grocery store should have something similar in stock. Your body and the Earth will thank you!
